Overview of the Graduate Minor in Women's Studies
The Department of Women’s Studies at The Ohio State University is an interdisciplinary field of research that focuses on gender. Our classes teach students about the ways in which gender functions as a socially and culturally constructed phenomenon that affects our personal lives, artistic expression, social relationships, politics, and the ways individuals think about themselves and the world. Women's Studies considers the ways that class, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation and age shape women's and men's experience. We integrate scholarship and methodology from the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and legal studies in order to teach students how to approach questions from multiple perspectives. This interdisciplinary approach can enrich students’ knowledge base in their home disciplines. The Women's Studies Graduate Minor is an excellent background for students in English, History, African American and African Studies, Comparative Studies, Education, Law, Nursing, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work and other fields. The abundance of certificate programs nationwide suggests that students want official documentation of Women’s Studies work for their transcripts.
